Allvoices Presents the American Pundit 2013 Contest

Allvoices is pleased to announce this year's American Pundit contest to encourage both national and international dialogue on American politics as a follow-up to last year's popular contest around the elections. If you're a "political junkie" or know someone who is, this is the place for you.

Share your thoughts, opinions and reporting between now and November 30, 2013, and win cash in the process! Once all the votes are counted in December, one winner will earn the title of American Pundit and claim a Grand Prize of $5,000. One runner-up will also be selected and will win $1,000, and one honorable mention will win $250.

Underneath where you write your story, you'll see a checkbox next to the words "Enter American Pundit Contest." Clicking on that checkbox and then publishing your story will enter it into the contest.

What We're Looking For

Well-informed, well-written political reports that relate to American politics. Pundits are encouraged to write about what they're passionate about, in addition to responding to pre-selected discussion topics issued by the Allvoices editorial team.

A few examples of article topics that would work include:

  • How President Obama is conducting his second term
  • Your opinions on how elected officials are responding to the issues of the day
  • Reporting or commentary on political issues at the state level
  • Responsible, high-quality coverage of political issues that are not always given adequate attention in other media outlets
  • In general, articles should reflect, analyze, discuss and/or predict, rather than simply summarizing. Pieces that you've already published on Allvoices or elsewhere are not eligible for the contest.

    The Prizes

    Two American Pundit contest entrants will be selected as winners of a Semi-Monthly prize shortly after 15th and last day of each month between February 28 and November 30, 2013.

    Allvoices will post a semi-monthly writing assignment at the beginning of each month and on the 16th at One of the two winners of each Semi-Monthly Prize will be awarded to the author of an article that relates to this topic. The other Semi-Monthly winner may be for any article relating to American politics submitted to the American Pundit contest.

    The judging may include the following criteria:

    • Writing strength (30% - 35%):
      • Strong command of written English
      • Well written, thoughtful, clear and coherent
      • Few or no grammar, spelling or stylistic errors
      • Links included back to sources, when applicable
      • Stories written in journalistic style
    • Originality (25% - 30%):
      • Is the piece new, refreshing and unique, or does it simply repeat and rehash what has already been written on the same topic?
    • Adherence to theme (15% - 30%)
      • Does the article reflect the assigned semi-monthly writing assignment, or if submitted regarding a general topic, does it relate to American politics?
    • Popularity and SEO (15% - 20%)
      • Social media success
      • Number of page views
      • Good, SEO-optimized headline
      • Inclusion of relevant keywords and tags, plus any relevant images and videos
      • Sparks discussions

    Winners of the Semi-Monthly prize will receive a one-time bonus of $250 and automatically earn Anchor status (the highest Allvoices reputation level) if they are not already Anchors. They will also have the opportunity to be eligible for the grand prize, which will be announced in December. Writers are not eligible to win more than one Semi-Monthly prize.

    Even writers who do not become Semi-Monthly winners are eligible for quick promotion to the Anchor level for high-quality work.
