Online Kentucky Derby wagering legal for US residents

Do you have a hunch about the 139th Kentucky Derby? If so, you may be interested in knowing that you don’t have to be at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky., to place a bet.

As Punditty was reading up on this year’s race at Kentuckyderby.com, he noticed an option for betting. Twinspires.com, a Churchill Downs company, is taking bets on this year’s Run for the Roses. To learn more, simply go to Kentuckyderby.com and click on “Bet the Derby.”

A link will take you to twinspires.com, an online betting site.

The informational guide there reads:

The field for this year's Kentucky Derby can be found below. Watching the Derby is always more fun when you have a bet on the race. It's never been easier to get in on the action. After you have found your Derby horse and jockey, click "Bet" and then choose the amount you wish to wager and we'll guide you through the rest.

In his younger years, Punditty enjoyed trips to Reno and Las Vegas to visit the sports books at various establishments in those fine cities. While horse racing wasn’t ol’ Punditty’s favorite wagering sport – he preferred football, basketball and baseball – he did get lucky a time or two on the ponies.

Not being a horse-racing expert in any sense of the word, Punditty decided increase his Derby fun this year by placing a little wager by using the highly unscientific “hunch” method. After reviewing the names of all the horses and little else, the Punster of Dit decided to place a $10 wager on Normandy Invasion, listed at 12-1. However, twinspires.com requires bettors to fax them supporting documents such as a driver’s license or a Social Security card. Upon learning of this requirement, Punditty decided to place an “imaginary bet” on Normandy Invasion instead.

Javier Castelleno will be riding Normandy Invasion, trying to pull off the upset by beating the favorite, Orb, listed at 7-2 on the twinspires odds board. Other top contenders include Verrazano at 4-1 and Goldencents at 5-1. There are four super longshots listed at 50-1: Golden Soul, Giant Finish, Falling Sky and Frac Daddy. The odds for all the horses can be found here.

Will Punditty regret not taking the time to drive over to his local FedEx to send a fax to twinspires.com? Or will he breathe a sigh of relief when another horse wins?

Tune in for the action on NBC at about 6:24 Eastern Daylight Time today to find out!
