Bush 41 and Bush 43 email accounts hacked by cybercriminals
Unsettling news from the Secret Service today, as the agency tasked with protecting current and former US presidents is investigating a hack of the personal email accounts of both former President George W. Bush and his father, former President George H.W. Bush. The agents are also investigating hacks on several other Bush family members, including former first lady Barbara Bush.
I bet members of the Bush family will start getting a lot of those "You should check this out! I made $5000 a month working from home!" emails.
The Secret Service confirmed that it is investigating the Bush family email account hacking, but would neither confirm or deny that any hack had taken place. We're pretty sure the hack did take place, though, because emails and pictures from former President H.W. Bush are already posted on The Smoking Gun.
Of course, there is absolutely nothing tawdry or scandalous in the personal emails of a squeaky-clean guy like former President H.W. Bush. But oh, the things we'd see if they had hacked former President Clinton's email account instead.
Would you like to look at the photos the hackers acquired, and then feel dirty about yourself? You can see a slideshow of the hacked Bush pictures online at the Smoking Gun. There is one mildly amusing one of George W. standing next to a cardboard cutout of himself dressed as Saddam Hussein. The "South Park" guys are going to have field day with that one.
The rest of the pictures just look like images from a J. Crew catalog for old people. There are, though, some curious self-portraits of the elder Bush, painted from the perspective of being in the tub and the shower.
The hacker, who calls himself "Guccifer" is said to have infiltrated six Bush-related email accounts, including those of family friends like CBS Sports' Jim Nantz.
I knew that Jim Nantz was a Republican.
So is there any good gossip in these personal emails of the former presidents? There is.
When Bush 41 was gravely ill in December, Bush 43 wrote an email saying he was "thinking about eulogy." "Hopefully I’m jumping the gun," the younger Bush wrote, "But since the feeling is that you all would rather me speak than bubba, please help." ("bubba" is presumed to be a reference to former President Clinton).
During this period, H.W.'s Chief of Staff wrote an email to the Bush children reading, "your dad’s funeral team is having an emergency meeting at 10 a.m. just to go through all the details," and that this information "fell under the broadening category of things NOT TO TELL YOUR MOTHER."
Former President H.W. has been released from the hospital and is apparently recuperating nicely. But it probably won't help his spirits that his email was hacked.
