Family of five shot dead in New Mexico; 15 year old son charged with murder
A 15-year-old boy was reportedly arrested and charged with two counts of murder and three counts of child abuse Sunday over the fatal shooting of five people, including three children, in New Mexico.
According to a CNN report, police have described the shooting, which took place in a home outside of Albuquerque Saturday night, as “horrific,” and a “very gruesome scene.” The five victims included a well-known pastor and four members of his family—with the three children, two girls and a boy, being grade school age. Their names have not been released to the public because the crime scene was still being processed. But the home is said to belong to Chaplain Greg Griego and his wife Sarah Griego.
Greg Griego was the Chaplain for the Albuquerque Fire Department and worked with several prisons ministries. He was also a former pastor of Cavalry Church. Fire Chief James Breen said in a statement that Griego was a “dedicated professional that passionately served his fellow man and the fire-fighters of this community,” adding that “his calming spirit and gentle nature will be greatly missed.”
His brother, former state Senator Eric Griego, also issued a statement on behalf of the family, asking that the media respect the family’s privacy at this time.
The teen boy in police custody is reportedly a relative to the murdered family but the nature of the relation is not yet known. The alleged shooter used more than one gun, including what police called “an assault rifle,” and shot the victims multiple times each. A motive for the crime has not been reported.
The boy is being charged as a juvenile but investigators say that could change as the case progresses.

The 15 year old boy charged with murdering his family, in Alburqueque, New Mexico on Saturday, has been identified as Nehemiah Griego, the son. He reportedly had no prior run-ins with the law. Spokesman for the state, Bob Tafoya said a check of Children, Youth and Families Department came up empty for any past incidences involving the teen or his family.
Nothing explains the horrific murders of his entire family--dad, 51-year-old Bob Griego, his 40-year-old mom Sarah, his 9-year-old brother Zephania and his five and two-year old sisters Jael and Angelina respectively.
