How Powerball could get better and have more winners

Nov. 28, 2012

Have you checked your Powerball numbers yet?

If not, let me help. The winning Powerball numbers for the drawing held at 11:59 EST on Nov. 28 are:

5 - 16 - 22 - 23 - 29 Powerball 6.

Did you win? Oh, sorry to hear that.

And besides, what would you do with $550 million, anyway, after you gave the IRS roughly $182 million? Do you think $368 million in disposable income would be enough to make a difference in your life and the lives of certain friends and loved ones?

You better believe it would. But do you also think $10 million would bring about some big changes? That gets a “yup” from me. If you agree, would you be willing to give up an incredible longshot at a single $550 million winning ticket in exchange for 55 not-quite-as-long shots at 55 winning tickets worth $10 million apiece?

I would.

Instead of just one drawing, there would be 55 drawings when the jackpot hit $550 million, 60 drawings if it were $600 million, and so on. This would lead to more people playing, more revenue for the Powerball states and yes, more winners.

A compromise could be reached for the big jackpot purists,. The first $100 million could be a single jackpot in and of itself, with the first (or last) set of numbers drawn determining the winner for the super-size prize. In the case of our $550,000 Powerball jackpot of Nov. 28, that would mean a total of 46 sets of numbers being drawn: 45 sets for 45 $10 million prizes and one set for a single $100 million prize.

Contrary to hard-luck stories out of Las Vegas, Atlantic City and riverboats docked up and down the Mississippi, gambling does not have to be an all-or-nothing proposition. You do not have to break the bank or drain your bank account trying, and the fabled “House” doesn’t have to pay out just one time to one lucky person.

With a little ingenuity and some restructuring of the Powerball (or Mega Millions) approach to interstate gaming, there’s no reason we can’t dozens of winners instead of just one lucky person the next time a multistate lottery jackpot reaches into the hundreds of millions of dollars.
