Hope of victory slips away as Romney lies backfire in Ohio
No matter what the outcome of the 2012 presidential election, history will remember Mitt Romney’s campaign for its lies.
With unprecedented regularity, the Romney campaign has been caught misleading, abusing scare-tactics, distorting the truth, and outright lying.
Perhaps the most significant in the list of Romney lies is his claim that auto manufacturer Chrysler-Jeep was “thinking of moving all production to China.”
The claim was so outrageous, Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne issued a public statement refuting the Romney falsehood.
“I feel obliged to unambiguously restate our position: Jeep production will not be moved from the United States to China,” Marchionne wrote. “Jeep assembly lines will remain in operation in the United States and will constitute the backbone of the brand. … It is inaccurate to suggest anything different,” according to NBC News.
However, even after being called-out by the CEO of Chrysler, it did not stop Romney from continuing to repeat the false claims on the campaign trail. Instead, as if for spite, the Romney campaign doubled-down on the false comments by coming out with television and radio ads repeating the impending-doom job loss lie for Jeep employees in Ohio.
The obvious question is – what is wrong with Mitt Romney? Does he have so little moral character that he simply does not care about the truth? Or is he so desperate to try to win the election at all costs, he really does not care about anything else?
“Already having cemented his reputation as perhaps the most fluid, craven ‘flip-flopper’ in American presidential political history, Mitt has now sewed up his reputation as the most bold-faced liar as well,” Addictinginfo said in a report titled, Ohio’s Three Leading Newspapers Blast Romney’s ‘Jeep-To-China’ Lie In Critical Swing State.
In Ohio, Sun News Plain Dealer said, “Mitt Romney is desperate to convince Ohio voters that he's the candidate most committed to the U.S. auto industry -- no matter how much confusion he must sow to do it.” The editorial further blasted Romney, calling him reckless and labeling his claims about Jeep “a masterpiece of misdirection.”
In the past week, pundits on both sides of the aisle have been suggesting that any momentum Romney may have had has ended or reversed and the campaign is in trouble.
On Wednesday, WPTV in West Palm Beach, published a memo from a Florida GOP insider that indicates the real condition of the Romney campaign. It says, “The early and absentee turnout is starting to look more troubling. As of yesterday, Republicans made up only 22% of early voters and 30% of returned absentee votes…The Democrat turnout machine in the country has been very effective and they are cleaning our clock…”
It is beginning to look like the Romney team has known they are losing for quite some time.
After the infamous, secretly taped, 47 percent video, many in the GOP had all but written off Romney’s chances of winning and declared the gaffe-filled campaign the ultimate end of the Republican Party.
With the betrayal of his own party etched in the right-wing blogosphere, Romney’s donations began to dry up. The campaign needed something to restore the flow of money, so the candidate abandoned nearly every position he ever recorded and laced his flip-flops and false advertising with outright lies, like the one he has been telling about Chrysler-Jeep.
After nearly two years of campaigning, there is finally an answer to the question: Who is the real Mitt Romney? He is a man with no moral or ethical code, eager to lie to as many voters as possible to get elected, so he can go to Washington and break every phony promise he has ever made.
