L-R: Rick Santorum, Ron Paul, Herman Cain, Mitt Romney, Rick Perry, Newt Gingrich and Michele Bachmann

CHARLSTON, SC - The stage was smaller for Thursday night's South Carolina 2012 GOP Presidential Debate, with just four candidates left: Ron Paul, Mitt Romney, Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum.

Among the topics discussed was the right to life, and Paul, the only physician on the panel, said that when he was practicing medicine, he always considered the treatment of a pregnant woman as "treating two patients."

Dr. Paul acknowledged that abortion was a personal issue, and added that the federal government should not get involved in abortion. Instead, Paul said that states should be allowed to make their own abortion laws.

Paul said that it would take "years and years" to get federal laws changed, adding that his solution was to "repeal Roe vs. Wade on a state-by-state basis."

Some states already have strict restrictions on abortion including, Nebraska, Idaho, Indiana, Kansas, Oklahoma and Alabama, according to the New York Times.

I can see why Ron Paul is liked by some people since he marches to a beat of less government in our lives but weak on foreign policy.
Reply By TiffanyMadison TiffanyMadison | about 1 month ago
He's not weak on foreign policy. He believes in bringing our troops home, fortifying our own bases and securing our own defense instead of the rest of the world's. We are not the world's policeman anymore. We cannot afford it. His foreign policy is supported by soldiers, but hated by the defense war profiteers. Nothing weak about it, it's American.

Actually strong on foreign policy. The sane man is called crazy in the land of the lunatics.

I watched some US commentators today. They seem to have forgotten that Ron Paul exists!

I am not fond of abortion, but I am committed to the rights of privacy. That is what Roe v Wade is about. It is none of the state's business what a woman does with or to her body. I would not even interfere in the right to suicide for man or woman.

Paul is different from the pack. Whether you agree with him or not, at least you know that he believes in whatever he says.

Sorry I plan to keep my reproductive rights! Ron Paul and everyone can take a flying leap. They are making reproductive slaves out of women. Unless you want to personally handle the results - stay out of my womb and my sex life! I am a grown woman with a college education and can decide, along with the help of my phycisian and my personal beliefs, what to do and when to do it! I am not property for you to decide what and how I handle this!

You have no idea what he's talking about, do you? He ultimately believes it is not the FEDERAL GOVERNMENT'S right to tell you what you can and cannot do with your body. That is not liberty. He believes you can't legislate morality, that is not liberty. If you want an abortion, the state you live in should emulate that as you have free reign to move anywhere you want. Federally mandating anything that is not in the Constitution sets precedents for abuse and that is exactly what has happened. See the link below and educate yourself. We are in dire times, the ability to remain ignorant on our leader's policies is over.

Educate yourself on what his position is...

Personally, he is against abortions...

But, he is also for the federal government to stay out of a woman's uterus. Quite honestly, abortions should be part of doctor patient confidentiality and the matter should not be discussed in politics. Keep it between the doctor and patient. There shouldn't be laws at the federal or state level(either for or against... separation of church and state...it's really about religion isn't it?). If the federal government didn't have an opinion, and the state didn't have an opinion, then all that would be left is the private discussion between the doctor and patient...some doctors would do them, safely, others would not. This whole messy discussion arises when one group of people want to mandate their morals and beliefs onto others.

These ideas are what Ron Paul stands for, and since they are complicated it is difficult for him to answer to most peoples satisfaction most questions in debates in 30 seconds or a minute.

My first chance to vote, when I turned 21, was 1968. After Bobby died I had no interest in the election. At this point I feel the same way. It could change if someone else comes along, perhaps Jerry Brown. I don't even know if that would work. Perhaps a Third Party. Been there before.

the problem with making abortion illegal is that it is not going to stop abortions. People will still get them - just as they did before Roe v. Wade and for thousands of years before that. Roe v. Wade brought abortion into clean operating rooms and out of back alleys. More women will die (and their babies) if they must resort to self-abortion or quack doctors doing it illegally.

I actually don't understand why this remains a prominent talking point for the GOP when there are so many other issues that need to be addressed, like the housing crisis that goes on, unemployment, low wages and the deadly roll back of anti-pollution laws.

It's an issue because the demagogues keep bringing it up to pretend there is a difference between democrats and republicans, when the ideology is all a rouse. If either party cared about liberty, they would leave the issue alone, or repeal Roe vs. Wade and make it a state's rights issue as it should have been. However, they don't. This issue is how the dems keep convincing people (despite their record) that they care about civil liberties, and how the other repubs keep convincing people the religious right should follow them. Trouble with Ron Paul is he says, whether you agree with it or not, it's going to happen and therefore none of the federal government's business. They don't like that.

I think it is a personal choice but have never heard of one woman who throughout her entire life were glad they aborted their babies. Studies will show that many end up in counseling especially after they had other children--after they see that they killed a person. Most women and men at some point in their life have suffered emotionally for making the choice to kill their unborn child. But again each person should be allowed to use their own discretion.
I also agree with Ron Paul about the drug wars. It needs to stop. His foreign policy is also right on! My two military sons support Ron Paul financially! They've both been deployed and found they and their buddies were being used by our US govt as pawns for oil, it's not about fighting for freedom in Iraq and Afgh. What a waste of money and lives. I am so angry as my friend from work just received her husband's dead body back from Afgh. and for what? What a loss, what a lie, it is evil! Obama must go!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Reply By LouiseRoys LouiseRoys | about 1 month ago
You do remember that Obama was not the one who put our soldiers in Iraq and Afghanastan don't you. Bush did that and he didn't even try to bring them home. I have four nephews in the military on active duty. My father served and died in Korea. My stepfather served in Korea. Twelve of my uncles served in WW2. We know duty and sacrifice. They fought for individual rights, nor corporate rights. They fought for family and freedom, even before Native Americans were allowed to vote. That right was granted in 1962. As far as abortion, I didn't say I was for it. I said I believe in a woman's right to control her own reproductive system and make her own choices. The GOP has been battering women to accept their values and choices on family, reproction and workers rights for decades. Why is this different. Drug wars have to stop. The GOP puts corporation rights and goals before that of families and working people. If they didn't the millions of formerly American worker jobs would not have moved overseas. If they gave credience to what citizens really wanted, we'd have jobs, health insurnace, and tighter environmental controls. You can only go so far when you have every Republican refusing to work towards any goal suppports by the Democrats. The Right to Work Bill in Indiana is a prime example. 73% of registered voters in Indiana, Republicans and Democrats alike, do not want the Right to Work Bill and definately don't want it as an ammendment to the constitution. The owner of Indian's largest steel mill and one of the largest in the world came out against this bill and backed the unions who worked for him. Yet the Republicans, led by outgoing Gov. Daniels are trying for force this on the citizens. He declared he was going to get his way at all costs. Well the cost comes not to him or his cronies, but the the working families of Indiana. This type of bill was voted into office in the early 1950's by a Republican majority and once again, against the will of the voters. The following election, every Republican who voted for the legislation or sponsored it, including the Republican Gov, were voted out of office by an overwhelming majority. Do they every learn. (

One of the things we keep trying to get across is that bush and obama and any of the other establishment candidates are pretty much the same. So it don't matter who started it. They are all in it together.

Obama said and I quote, "When I become president, the first thing I will do is bring our troops home and you can bank on it!" He lied, he lied, he lied and he is still at it!

That's right, throw away the Presidency rather than doing the following:

a) GOP Leadership steps up and threatens to sue on behalf of Republicans for the media bias displayed against Paul, condemning it in the strongest possible terms,
b) Give Ron Paul equal time at debates and let him sink or swim on his own positions.
c) Get the media to stop using known bad information about Paul (isolationist)
d) Get the media to stop asking questions they wouldn't ask any other candidate (third party run, electability)

Because here's what going to happen: We will still write in Paul, every single supporter. But we're going to do something else, speaking as a Republican of 30 years. To show our displeasure with the GOP, we will vote against EVERY SINGLE REPUBLICAN CANDIDATE, RIGHT DOWN TO DOG CATCHER.

it will be very interesting to see what happens if Paul ends up running as an independent. i think he would pull more votes than the establishment GOP thinks. If Paul has any chance of making a dent in the GOP, 2012 will be his year. He would be 80 years old by the next election.
Reply By TiffanyMadison TiffanyMadison | about 1 month ago
He won't do that. That would marginalize him and his support and ruin Rand Paul's chances. He would rather return to his party, not as an odd duck, but a civil libertarian with the voice of the people behind him. He's not vain, unlike the rest of these guys. http://buchanan.org/blog/the-true-believer-4983

thanks for the story itobin.

This view is consistent with Libertarian ideology in terms of state's retaining power.

Paul could be the spoiler in next election if he runs as an Independent similar to what Ralph Nader has done with the Green Party. Although, the Nader camp says they didn't pull votes in 2000 in the Bush/Gore election. It's still debatable.

When it comes to Ron Paul there is nothing the establishment won't do to distract the people from seeing the truth. They flat out lie. They bring people out on tv to lie about him too. They are scared of him.
Watching mitt and sontorum dance back and forth the other night was almost entertaining, saying each others name so they can take away time from all the real issues. (Who cares about newt's sex life)
That's what they were doing in sc. Let's see how they do in the debate tonight.

They haven't told you that newt and santorum each have failed to get on all the states ballots. Not just Virginia. They are already out 500 delegates each. That means Rick Santorum Newt Gingrich are here just to divert attention. Right now would be a good time to wake up if you haven't already.
Ron Paul or Mitt Romney? If they have to go through this much to take away our opportunity to vote for a real candidate that isn't telling us a bunch of lies. What else do you think they would do?
