after the 2007 earthquake

According to the United States Geological Survey, the recent earthquake that struck California from Santa Cruz to Mountain Shasta was the strongest amongst all earthquakes that have recently struck California. On the Richter scale, the magnitude of the California earthquake was 4.7.

The aftershocks were felt in adjoining areas near California. Reno in Nevada was amongst those areas as well. In California, the shocks were felt in Whitehawk, Valley Ranch and Clio.

It was 11:37 PM when the earthquake struck California and the epicenter was about 13.7 km (8.5 miles) deep. The distances of the epicenter from the areas where the aftershocks were felt were about 15 km (9 miles) SSE (153°) from Whitehawk, CA; 17 km (11 miles) SSE (151°) from Valley Ranch, CA; 18 km (11 miles) SSE (151°) from Clio, CA; 37 km (23 miles) NW (322°) from Truckee, CA; 56 km (35 miles) W (279°) from Reno, NV; and 145 km (90 miles) NE (36°) from Sacramento, CA.

Apart from California, on Thursday at 5:37 AM, Berkeley was also rattled with a 3.6-magnitude earthquake. This earthquake was centered on the campus of University of California Berkeley. Also, a week earlier, there were two earthquakes recorded near the Californian city. According to the USGS, the depth of the epicenter was 9.7 km (6.0 miles).

A report was also submitted by about 57 people to inform USGS that they felt the shocks of the earthquake in the Oroville area. Therefore, it can be safely assumed that the shocks were experienced by many people in the adjoining areas of California. And these series of earthquakes have left people even more fearful of a greater earthquake to strike the region.

No significant damage was caused by the California earthquake. The reason for the earthquake is speculated to be the Hayward fault. This fault is considered the most dangerous faults in California. However, it has been confirmed by the authorities that no significant damage has been caused, and all buildings and human lives are safe.

Some are fearful that these earthquakes might be indications for bigger earthquakes to come. Residents of the affected areas informed the authorities that many of them actually woke up in the morning due to the rattling and shaking caused by the earthquake in California.
